Lancaster Canal
This gentle waterway offers wonderful views of the Silverdale coast, Forest of Bowland and rolling countryside of Wyre.
The Lancaster Canal is unique as it is a contour canal (built along the natural lie of the land) and has 41 miles without locks. This is the longest stretch in the country!
Tewitfield is based at the southernmost point of the canal. A £50 million restoration scheme is planned to reopen the 14 miles of canal to Kendal although no date has yet been set for the work to start.
Though the canal was once busy with cargoes from Kendal, Preston and Lancaster, it has only just been connected to the national waterway network by the Millennium Ribble Link.
A waterbus now runs on the canal in the summer months, resurrecting a 200-year old tradition. Enjoy one of a variety of cruises on offer, including Lancaster to Carnforth, Carnforth to Tewitfield, Lancaster country cruises and Lune Aqueduct Cruises with Lancaster Canal Packet Boats (www.budgietransport.co.uk)
